i absolutely loved our stay at golden fleece. our room 'the shambles' was uniquely beautiful, which made me feel right at home. the remodeled bathroom was also a highlight. breakfast in the quiet morning was pleasant, especially with the swap to poached eggs. the location is perfect, right at the end of the shambles, close to everything you want to see.
bins didn’t get emptied, and I missed having bigger tea mugs.

comfortable stay with minor noise
The Standard Twin Room was impeccably equipped, ensuring we had everything needed for a restful night. Every staff member displayed a genuine willingness to assist, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
Despite being above a busy pub, there were moments of outside noise that could have been lessened.

A hauntingly charming stay!
Our stay in the Deluxe Room was absolutely delightful. the room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had all the amenities you could need. The location was perfect, right near all the historic sights, making it easy to explore. The breakfast was a highlight, featuring a delicious full English which set us up for the day. One thing to improve would be the accessibility of the stairs, as they may be tricky for those with mobility issues.

Our stay in the Standard Twin Room was a delightful experience. The room was charming, with quirky features and a cozy atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home. Dining options were fantastic, especially the full English breakfast that was included.
The stairs were a bit hard to navigate due to their age.

The atmosphere was charming, with rustic decor and quirky features throughout. Best of all, it felt like a step back in time with an ancient, creaky charm. It’s a must-visit for anyone after a ghostly night adventure. Got a bit spooked though, heard weird knocking all night, but that just added to the experience! Loved exploring the local shops nearby.
Felt so much at home, no complaints whatsoever.

We had such a lovely time here! The entertainment at night was a blast, and the garden area was perfect for unwinding with a drink. Just a small thing, but it would’ve been nice to have some bottled water in the room. 😊

Delicious Dining Experience with Historic Charm
I dined at the on-site restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. The sirloin steak was perfectly cooked and the atmosphere added to the charm of the meal. A busy evening, yet the staff handled it gracefully. Definitely a must-visit for food lovers!

missingWrote a review on 08 Julrustic charmcentral locationpeeling plaster
The rustic charm comes through with the old architecture and quirky decor, making for an intriguing atmosphere during the stay. The location places you right in the heart of the city, perfect for exploring local shops and sights.
The room had a large area of plaster peeling off the wall above the bed, which felt damp and uncomfortable. The beds proved to be on the hard side, making rest a challenge, and the lack of sufficient plug sockets meant I had to unplug the TV just to make a cup of tea. Checking in was a hassle, as we sat waiting for attention for over 15 minutes before we had to remind the busy bar staff. With no overnight staff, settling in lacked that personal touch, and breakfast took an exceedingly long time to arrive despite the scarcity of patrons, and review confirmed it was underwhelming. It's easy to overlook the quaint quirks of this historical spot, but at £140, the room felt overpriced.

we stayed for a night in lady peckett room, it was super quirky with sloping n creakin floors, but that’s what u expect from the oldest pub in york. the staff were really friendly and helpful, and breakfast was yum, loved the full english. location is perfect, right opposite the shambles, super convenient for everything. the vibe here is cozy n we had a great night's sleep. totally recommend this place!
the only downside was the stairs to get to the room, not great for those with mobility issues. also, there was a bit of noise from the pub downstairs but it wasn’t too bothersome.
